Club History

Tring Rugby Club was formed in 1963 when Don Dover & Arthur Howlet met in the Royal Hotel, Tring and decided to form the club. An advert was placed in a local paper and Trings first skipper, a New Zealander called Mark Ottway, was duly selected (Mark also selected the club colours all black and Tring still play in a black kit). At this time the club played at Manor Road on land lent by Jeff Mead and would drink in the Black Horse public house located in Tring town centre.

In the late 60s the club moved to its current home at Pendley Sports Centre, Cow Lane. The club house has now been rebuilt and extended twice during the last 30 years at Cow Lane and with over £20,000 being spent on pitch improvements in the past 4 seasons the ground is now in good order.

Tring Rugby Club Committee is headed by a President of Danish origin, Neils Hvass, and Chaired by city financier Martyn Kirk whose father was a past President of the club. One of the main strengths of the club is its committee, who meet regularly to ensure that the club is run on a sound financial footing and that the club will still be around for the next 40 years.

On the playing side Tring have gone from strength to strength. The first team have enjoyd three successive promotions and reaching the Quarter Finals of the PowerGen Intermediate Cup and now play in London 2 North. The second team compete in the highly competitive Canterbury Shield.

Tring have had some exotic internationals play for them over the past 40 years. This tradition was started in the 70s when current committee member and past Presidents son, Chris Wallis played for Oman and the current Presidents son, Marcus Hvass played for Denmark. In the 1st team squad at present ex Saracen and Herts flanker Steve Kempster still captains the Malta side and second row Matt Adams has represented the Bahamas.

Tring also boast a large mini and junior section chaired by John Harrison with in excess of 300 boys and girls playing each weekend many of whom have gone on to play for the senior club over the last 30 years.
