This was the away performance we had been waiting for.

CS Rugby had no answer to Tring’s superior game in all departments.

The forwards took the game to CS who had no answers although they never gave up and were dogged throughout the match, eventually denying Tring a bonus point, the only disappointment of the day.

The forwards were in outstanding form with the scrum and lineout working well and the back row to the fore in defence and attack. Harry Green, who switched to blind side from 2nd row, produced some excellent ball carrying and was the first to score after several phases from forward play. Tom Newton added the extras to go with his earlier penalty and Tring raced into a 0-10 lead.

CS hit back although they were aided by some of the Tring kicking and I think after 3 goes they realised there was a strong wind behind them. After several scrums back in Tring territory CS could not break through a much improved Tring defence. The teams swapped penalties for Tring to go into the break 3-13 up.

In the second half, Tring 9, Richard Beeny, took the game by the scruff of the neck as he excelled again, sniping around the fringes at every opportunity and he was the one that set up the next try after a lovely break that saw Sam Clapham gallop to the line to make it 3-18.
After another penalty from Newton, Tring gave CS some hope after a very harsh yellow given to McCartney who had only been on the filed for 5 minutes. A simple offside was given a stern ticking off and a yellow. Nothing changed when down to 14 men as the Tring forwards continued to boss the game and although no points were conceded during this period CS eventually got a breakthrough with 10 minutes to go. 10-21.

This was not a nervy last 10 as we are sometimes used to but a period that Tring dominated. Mitchell replaced the excellent Clapham at full back and was given the ball in space with one player to beat. Rather than take on the defender Mitchell invited a tackle but still standing he managed to drag the tackler over the line with him and the ref awarded the try.

Both sides finished the game with 14 men as Tommy Wards handbag caught the back of the CS tackler who swung his Mulberry to no effect. For some reason the ref took a dim view and rather than just getting on with the game he gave them both yellows. You will see more aggressive encounters at a Miss Selfridge sale.

The bonus point loomed but Tring had run out of time and the ref blew with Tring poised in the CS 22. The game finished 10-26 but it was the performance away from home that counted.
