The Stan Wallis Cup
A pre-season 15-a-side tournament that was first introduced to Tring and organised for a number of years by the then 1st XV Captain and today’s organiser, John Stevens.

The tournament was very popular, but when John moved away it moved with him until Giles Wallis, Tring’s current Head Coach, returned to the Club after being injured-out of a 1st class rugby career. Giles volunteered to re-introduce and organise the tournament for a couple of years, which he did successfully until it was again dropped by the new coach, John Lambden, as he favoured other pre-season competition.

Giles and his dad Chris, a long-time player and supporter of The Club, decided to present a Cup for the Tournament which they named in memory of Giles’s grandfather, Stan Wallis, who was Chairman of the Club and then President until he died in 1991. The cup was last won by Old Albanians, who narrowly beat Tring in the final; we are delighted that Old Albanians are returning the cup today and have entered a team in this year’s tournament.

Stan Wallis was a very active Chairman and President of The Club, having played 1st-Class rugby for Bridgend during the 2nd World War. He started watching his son Chris play at the end of the 1st season of the Club in 1964-1965 and was soon co-opted on to the TRUFC committee. When the club was forced to move from its then home in at Manor Farm in 1968, it was Stan as Chairman that negotiated with Dorian Williams and the Pendley Trustees for its current ground next to the then Tring Town Football Club, prior to the establishment of the multi-sport Pendley Sports Centre. In short time, the committee under Stan’s guidance badgered various local dignitaries, banks, breweries and members for enough cash to build its 1st Clubhouse, (a pre-fabricated unit supplied at a large discount by a contact of Stan’s,) on the site and base of the current changing rooms. Stan oversaw rapid growth of the Club’s fortunes and remained an active supporter in old age, presenting Giles with his 1st rugby ball on his 3rd birthday! We toast him today and at the tournament on the 13th August.
