Tring 3's Triumph on derby day
Backs run the show at Cow Lane
Saturday saw Tring 3's welcome Watford 2's to Cow Lane.
Being a local derby they are usually tough, physical encounters and that's how the game turned out.
Tring won the toss and choose to play up the hill and out of Cow Corner. The hill advantage seemed to help Watford in the early exchanges as they're big forwards made yards deep into Tring territory. Despite good forward defense Watford managed to cross the line for the first score. Straight from the restart Watford again found themselves close to the Tring Line. Several Kick able penalties where rejected in favor of the line out and after sustain attacks they crossed for a second try after 15 minutes.
From that point the momentum of the game swung dramatically to Tring . The forwards started running hard lines and giving the half back options. From a 5 meter scrum Matt Hutchens ran strong line drawing in defenders before Sam Clapham off loaded a great ball to Cameran Mcphail to score under the posts.
That set the pattern for the rest of the first half. In attack the Tring forwards carried strongly giving the backs space to cut through time after time. Good last line defense limited Tring to one further try in the first half however. Nick Game scoring in the corner.
The second half started as the first half finished. Good forward work was complemented by quality communication and foot work in the backs. Sam Clapham scoring 2 quick tries with breaks from just inside the opponents have looked to have secured the game.
Watford had other ideas and started mounting some strong phase play of there own with their forward attacking the fringes well. Sustained hard defense from the Tring pack managed to keep them at bay and was rewarded with a turnover in midfield that allowed Nick Game to race under the sticks.
Having reduced Watford to 13 players through injuries the game was all but won. Some more powerful work from Dan Maxwell and Gareth Haywood on the Watford 22 set the platform for Luke Patterson to score an acrobatic diving try in the corner despite the attention of the Watford winger and fullback.
3 penalties from Nick Game put Tring out of sight with Watfords only consolation try coming in the last few minutes.
A good performance overall from the Tring side after a slow start. As ever with these game it was a tough, physical game but happily played in the right spirit.
