SAD – Sudden Adult Death Syndrome or SCD - Sudden Cardiac Death are terms used to describe unexpected deaths in young adults, primarily men.

They account for approximately 500 deaths in the UK each year.

We are therefore proposing the following action plan to address the issue of cardiac health in both younger people and those who fall into at risk categories;

Health questionnaire on registration of a player to include the following questions;

  • Has any member of your family had any cardiac issues under the age of 40?
  • Have you had any shortness of breath, felt faint or dizzy during or after exercise?
  • Have you encountered tightness in your chest or palpitations?

Tring RUFC have a wide age range in members and supporters and have a responsibility to ensure the health and welfare of all members, players and visitors to our club.

Approximately 30,000 Cardiac arrests occur outside a hospital setting each year in the UK. Research clearly evidences that the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) significantly improves the chances of survival following a cardiac arrest.

We have previously applied to the British Heart Foundation for a grant towards purchase of an AED . This was unfortunately unsuccessful due to the club not being accessible for the required, minimum amount of time.

We are therefore looking for alternative funding sources to enable the club to purchase an AED and are setting up and AED fund. Any donations to the fund will be gratefully received. Please look out for updates on the website and social media for fundraising events as we work towards our required total of £1,500.
Many thanks for your ongoing assistance

Regards

Chris Freestone
Welfare Director
