Position Title: Huel Tring Seniors Backs Coach
Reports to: Director of Rugby/Head Coach
Location: Huel Tring Rugby Football Club, Dorian Williams Sports Ground, Hertfordshire, Cow Lane, Tring HP23 5NS
Job Summary:
The Huel Tring Backs Coach will be responsible for developing, coaching, and refining the skills and strategies of the team's backs players. The successful candidate will work closely with the head coach, forwards coach, and other coaching staff to deliver a cohesive and effective team strategy. The role requires a focus on individual skill development, tactical understanding, game awareness, and the overall performance of the backs in both attack and defence.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Coaching & Development of Backs:
o Plan, implement, and evaluate backs-specific training sessions that focus on individual skills such as catch & pass, kicking, running lines, decision-making, and game awareness.
o Work with players to improve their handling skills, footwork, agility, and speed to maximise attacking potential.
o Develop and refine set-piece strategies specific to the backs (e.g., lineouts, scrums, attacking kicks).
o Provide ongoing feedback to players to support their development, both in individual sessions and during team training.
o Analyse the opposition’s backs and develop specific strategies and tactics to exploit weaknesses.
2. Tactical Planning & Strategy:
o Work with the head coach to design and implement attacking and defensive systems tailored to the strengths and weaknesses of the backs.
o Develop effective patterns of play, including backline moves, set piece plays, and attacking shape.
o Ensure players are well-prepared for match situations, understanding when to attack, kick, or maintain possession.
3. Game Preparation & Matchday Responsibilities:
o Attend and contribute to team meetings and strategy sessions to ensure alignment between backs and forwards.
o Assist in analysing the performance of the backs during matches, providing insight into tactical adjustments for future games.
o Provide on-field coaching during matches, offering tactical advice, adjustments, and player motivation.
4. Player Mentorship & Leadership:
o Foster a culture of continuous improvement and personal development for all backs players.
o Motivate players to maintain high levels of performance and discipline.
o Develop leadership within the back’s unit, guiding senior players to mentor younger or less experienced teammates.
5. Video & Data Analysis:
o Conduct video analysis (Veo) sessions to break down both individual and team performances, identifying areas for improvement.
o Use performance data and analytics to assess and develop player performance, as well as to scout opposition teams.
6. Collaboration with Coaching Staff:
o Work closely with the forwards coach and head coach to integrate the backs' game plan into the overall team strategy.
o Attend regular coaching meetings to discuss team tactics, player progress, and game plans.
o Contribute to the team’s overall preparation, development, and tactical setup.
7. Player Welfare & Development:
o Support the physical and mental well-being of backs players, ensuring they have access to appropriate resources, injury prevention techniques, and recovery strategies.
o Communicate with strength and conditioning staff to ensure backs players are meeting fitness and conditioning requirements.
Key Requirements:
1. Experience & Qualifications:
o Previous playing or coaching experience at a high level (professional, semi-professional, or elite amateur level).
o Relevant coaching qualifications (e.g., World Rugby Level 2 or 3, equivalent qualifications, or experience at an appropriate level).
o Proven track record of working with backs players or in a similar coaching role.
2. Technical Knowledge:
o Strong understanding of backline plays, attacking structures, and defensive systems.
o Expertise in skill development areas specific to backs (catch & pass, kicking, tactical running, game awareness).
o Ability to devise innovative attacking strategies, including set-piece moves, backline plays, and tactical kicks.
3. Personal Attributes:
o Excellent communication and leadership skills to engage with players and coaching staff effectively.
o Ability to motivate, inspire, and develop young talent.
o Strong organisational skills and attention to detail in planning sessions and game strategies.
o Analytical mindset with the ability to review and analyse performance using video analysis, data, and match footage.
4. Teamwork & Collaboration:
o Ability to work as part of a coaching team, sharing ideas and aligning strategies with the head coach and other coaching staff.
o Collaborative approach to developing both the backs and the overall team strategy.
5. Commitment & Passion:
o A passionate commitment to rugby coaching, player development, and team success.
o Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and travel for matches.
Desirable Qualifications:
• Experience coaching backs at level 5 and above.
• Strong background in video analysis and using performance analytics tools (e.g., Hudl, Veo, Sportscode).
• Knowledge of current trends in rugby tactics and the latest coaching methods.
Working Conditions:
• Tuesday & Thursday nights for training and Saturday match days.
• Remuneration will be discussed on application experience.
