Wamba Charity Visit

Wamba Charity Visit

Stephanie Yule27 Feb 2014 - 10:37

Ed Armitage, TringRugby Academy Player, has recently returned from a trip to Kenya. He sent us these words about his visit.

"My name is Ed Armitage and I am 17 years old. I have been playing Rugby for Tring from the age of five and am still loving every second of it. On February 13th, I set out for a small community in Northern Kenya called Wamba, along with 16 others including fellow Tring Rugby player Nic Williams, as part of a charity group that was set up by Clare Muir 10 years ago.

Wamba Community Trust is a small British charity that is dedicated to helping the children and young people in Wamba. The purpose of the trip was to visit all the local schools and communities in the area, taking with us a suitcase each crammed with clothes, school equipment and sports equipment. For the past two years the group have been raising money in order to fund various projects which include sponsoring girls to go to school, supplying pipes to a nearby reservoir and HIV/AIDS awareness training days for young people. Please visit the 'Wamba Community Trust' website to learn about the other fantastic projects which the Charity funds and how to get involved.

TringRugby Club very kindly donated 30 brand new shirts, for which a secondary school called CCM were very grateful. Sport is very important to Wamba, as it is used to fill the time when school is no longer accessible. However, Rugby is not played widely in Kenya - the first rule we had to convey to them was that the rugby ball is not a football! As a keen rugby player from the age of four, I was interested in bringing something new to Wamba that was important to me. The group and I spent an afternoon running Wamba's first rugby training session, in which a class of boys and girls aged between seven and ten got to grips with the basics of tag rugby! The children absolutely loved it and it was a great experience. Thank You again for the Club's donation. On my next visit, which I hope will be in the near future, I anticipate that rugby will have gained in popularity. Any future support from the Club will be greatly appreciated."

It's great to see our young players getting involved in projects likes this and spreading the joys of rugby. If you have anything you'd like to donate to Ed's suitcase for his next trip, please let us know.
