Tring started well in the rain, with George Carter fielding the kick off before the ball was knocked on after a few phases. Tring regained possession and returning captain JP Keyser made good yards before becoming isolated and was penalised for holding on.
Bishops Stortford kicked for a line out 15m out from Tring’s line. Tring disrupted the driving maul well to gain a scrum from which Ben Hogan executed the first of his many successful box kicks of the day. This pattern repeated twice more until Hogan has kicked Tring into the Stortford 22.
From here, George Hayes ripped the ball in contact and kept fighting to cross the Stortford line in the corner. Alex Harrison was just wide with the conversion. 5-0
The restart was again well fielded and followed by a solid exit before Tring were penalised for not supporting themselves at the ruck at what should otherwise have been a Tring turnover.
Stortford took a quick tap, making 40m before being stopped by some great cover tackles putting them into touch. Another good exit saw Tring back to halfway before losing possession on the floor and being kicked back to the Tring 5. More exits took Tring back to the Stortford 22 with David Cogger chasing well to be the first there to put the catcher under pressure. Good phases in the Stortford 22 saw Alex Harrison dive through under the posts and then convert his own try. 12-0
Chris Rose then took a bang to the head and was removed from the game for his own safety. With no substitutes Tring were down to 14 but with spirits high this had little effect.
More pressure led to newcomer Jack Simmonds running in clear under the posts for a try on debut with Harrison adding the extras. 19-0
More forward pressure saw Dave Cogger crash over. Harrison converted to put Tring 4 scores up at half time. 26-0
The second half started as the first finished. Tring had possession and Tommy Ward regathered his own kick through to score. 33-0
Alex Harrison then got his second with a show and go from first phase following a solid Tring scrum. With the kick straight in front, he made it 40-0
With the rain now really coming down, Stortford fought back at this point to make Tring’s life a bit more difficult. However, following a Stortford infringement, Harrison kicked Tring to a 5m lineout where David Cogger broke blind off the maul to claim his brace, scoring in the corner. A tough kick saw Harrison push the conversion slightly wide. 45-0
Against the run of play, a knock on in Tring’s 22 saw the ball fall kindly to a Stortford player who ran in uncontested to get them on the scoresheet. 45-7
Annoyed by this, Tring worked hard in the last 15 and were rewarded with a final try for Archie James, crashing over in the tight. Harrison converted to make 52-7 with 6 from 8 kicks and a personal tally of 22 points
With the restart the last play of the game, Tring gathered well before Archie James kicked the ball out to get both teams down into the warmth of the showers.
