Last minute try seals a narrow victory

Tring 4s staged a late fightback to beat Old Millhillians 20-17 on Saturday. Four Tring players guested for the opposition who arrived with only 11 men. All put in good performances along with the Millhillians' 10 and 12 who were both powerful runners.

Playing up the slope, Tring opened the scoring after 5 minutes. The ball popped out of a ruck in the 22 and Ben Hogan at 10 was the only player to react, hacking through and winning the one horse race to the touchdown while everyone else staged a mannequin challenge. Some weak defence allowed the visiting fly-half to level the scores at 5-5 after 20 minutes. Tring returned to the attack and an Aidan Manning try was ruled out for a marginal forward pass. Chris Rose, Paul Warwick and Jacob Barr all put in strong runs for Millhillians but Tring's defence held out, with Martin Beddall punching well above his height. At half-time the score remained at 5 all. At the break Tim Petty, James Brise and Nick Game replaced George Perceval, Aidan Manning and Paul Lamberth, who protested that he hadn't touched the ball for the first 40 minutes. I rest my case.

The visitors scored their second try almost straight from the kick-off, with the Tring defence still asleep following Mike Ward's rousing half-time team talk. Tring went back on the attack with Lewis Wright carrying well. 15 mintes into the second half Millhillians scored from a counter-attack, very much against the run of play. Tring found themselves 17-5 down and it looked like it might not be our day. 5 minutes later David Cogger rumbled over the line to the left of the posts to reduce the deficit to 17-10. With 15 minutes left, in a bizarre case of mistaken identity, Ben Hogan was shown a yellow card after some foul play from Wardy, and Tring were staring down the barrel of defeat. However, after an excellent break from the 22 by Phil Coleman and some outstanding team interplay, Wardy touched down in the bottom corner. As he should really have been in the sin bin at the time, the score doesn't count towards the naked mile. Tom Rogers' touchline conversion attempt hit the post, leaving Tring 17-15 down. The boys continued to press and eventually a barnstorming run from Guy Fountaine set up a second try for Cogger right on the final whistle to nick a hard fought win.
