The move to 15 players creates new opportunities and challenges across the pitch. Players begin to develop a greater understanding of positions, units, space and how forwards and backs work together to attack and defend effectively.

At U14s, the lineout is introduced for the first time, adding another important set-piece and providing players with new technical skills, roles and responsibilities to explore.

Players are also introduced to kicking at goal, developing another aspect of the game and beginning to understand how decisions around penalties, territory and points can influence how a team plays.

While the game becomes increasingly structured, our priority remains developing confident, skilful and adaptable rugby players, rather than defining players too early by a single position.

What's New at U14?

15-A-SIDE RUGBY – Players experience the full 15-player team for the first time, creating greater opportunities to understand positions, units and how the whole team connects.

LINEOUT INTRODUCED – Players begin learning the fundamentals of the lineout, including throwing, jumping, movement, timing and working together as a unit.

KICKING AT GOAL – Players can develop their goal-kicking skills and begin to understand when taking points may be the right decision for the team.

POSITIONAL UNDERSTANDING – Players explore different positions and start to understand the roles and responsibilities associated with them, while continuing to develop as all-round rugby players.
