I'm pleased to say I thought our lads stepped up , and thanks to those who made themselves available . We started the game really well , with intensity and desire, which took Hertford by surprise. This resulted in good supporting play, ball retention and support leading to us scoring first with a well-deserved try.
They had a very big front 8 who pushed us off the ball with ease in the set scrum, but in the ruck it was a different story and very even. Our ball retention and rucking technique was much improved, although there are still too many instances where focus was lost and some are holding off, out of position, watching the team mates in the ruck, this should not be acceptable amongst teammates. This is not an option from a support perspective, and we have to keep focused to either hit the ruck to clear out or stand in the guards positions.
Our tackling was good on the whole, considering we haven’t been able to train due to hard pitches. Although we do need to revisit as we let in a few soft trys on the blind side, which took the game away from us in the second half . In the post-match huddle the lads asked us for tackle training in the next session, good to see they have desire to fix things
Things to work on
• Our set plays were messy, especially the line out and we will be working on that again next week.
• Scrum technique and positioning were poor. Steve & Jon will work on forwards set piece, With better technique we will be able to compete with the packs bigger than us
• Clear out and securing own ball must improve. Responsibility of everyone close to the contact point
The scoreline belies an exciting game , showing commitment and intensity, with an under-strength A side ( 4 A's) due to availability and injury, an otherwise a good start to the season. Well done, but plenty to work on.
