Greater competition. Greater tactical understanding. Greater ownership.
Huel Tring Rugby U16s represents another important step towards the adult game, with players continuing to develop their technical ability, tactical understanding and confidence within a competitive 15-a-side environment.
A key progression at U16 is the move to a contested lifted lineout. Building on the introduction of lifting at U15, players now learn how to perform their roles effectively while competing against an opposition lineout.
This places greater importance on movement, communication, timing, accuracy and decision-making, while maintaining safe lifting and supporting techniques at all times.
Players are increasingly encouraged to understand why they are making decisions. Rather than simply executing a coach's instructions, we want them to recognise what the opposition is presenting, communicate with teammates and adapt accordingly.
What's New at U16?
CONTESTED LIFTED LINEOUT – Players can now use their lifting skills within a contested lineout, creating a more realistic set-piece challenge.
LIFT & COMPETE – Jumpers and lifters develop the ability to work safely and effectively while competing for possession.
MOVEMENT & TIMING – Players explore how movement, tempo and timing can create opportunities to win quality lineout ball.
READ THE OPPOSITION – Players begin to recognise opposition set-ups and make decisions about where and how to compete.
UNIT CONNECTION – Thrower, jumpers and lifters communicate and work together to solve the problems presented by the opposition.
Our U16 Philosophy
SCAN – Recognise space, pressure, threats and opportunities.
DECIDE & ADAPT – Make decisions and adjust when the picture changes.
COMPETE – Develop the confidence and skills to perform effectively under pressure.
CONNECT – Understand how your actions contribute to your unit and the whole team.
COMMUNICATE – Share clear information that helps teammates make better decisions.
UNDERSTAND YOUR ROLE – Develop greater positional and tactical understanding.
TAKE OWNERSHIP – Players increasingly lead, problem-solve, reflect and take responsibility for their performance.

Our aim is simple: develop confident, skilful and tactically aware rugby players who can perform under pressure, adapt to what is in front of them and take increasing ownership of their rugby preparing them for the next stage of their journey at Huel Tring.
In the Under 16 group at Tring we look to provide a fun, supportive and challenging environment where players can learn new skills, work as a team, keep fit and just as importantly: make friends and gain confidence. All new players (boys, school year 11) are welcome to join in training sessions and can try the sport for a few weeks without commitment.
The 2026/27 season starts on Sunday 6th September at 10:30am. Throughout the season we train Wednesday nights, 7-8pm and every Sunday 10:30am-12pm if we don't have a fixture. Matches are played on Sunday mornings and include league, cup and friendly fixtures.
All abilities are always welcome, there's absolutely no need for prior experience. We’re a friendly bunch and our coaches are RFU trained.
We train as one squad, and currently run one mixed-ability squad on match days. As a coaching group our aim is develop all of our players equally, in a safe and enjoyable environment.
So if you’d like to give rugby a go, just come along to any training session (please check the fixture lists to ensure were not playing away) or drop me a line if you've got any questions.
